ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

My thanks to my friend, Peter Lee, the eminent local historian, and to Tom Broughton for his computer compilation of the Poor Records and finally the Staff at Nuneaton Library for access to the archives. I am also indebted to Peter’s unique Project Nefam 1996 (ongoing), which has a more detailed genealogical analysis of some of these family names, and should be used in conjunction with this study.

I would also like to thank original stalwart committee members of the Nuneaton and North Warwickshire Family History Society: Peter Lee, Carolyn Boss, Alva King, Wendy Cooper, and Bill Boswell – to name but a few.

For inspiration in the past, the following people who are no longer with us:

Mary Ashmore, Charles Betts, Arthur Cross, Francis Fawcett, Harry Leedham, Frederick Reeves, John Sherwood and Philip Vernon.

PREFACE

Most of us will be interested in our roots. Our ancestors may have come to Nuneaton for one of many reasons, whether it was for the mineral wealth or as new industries established. They may have come here to learn new skills or find manual work or in search of better living conditions.

This account of the local family surnames, compiled by Alan F Cook, presents to the residents of Nuneaton, particularly future generations, a comprehensive account of the genealogical beginnings surnames in the area. This record will be of great value to old Nuneatonians spread throughout the world, giving them the feeling of belonging to the town we call our own.

Without modern information processing it is hard to imagine how it could have been accomplished. Alan is a well known and regionally respected author and compiler of historical books, he is also a resourceful collector of information. He presents facts accurately and has searched far and wide into various sources where records have never been fully investigated and compiled it for this project.

Alan’s profession as a geologist has equipped him with fundamental principles for understanding history, he has dedicated himself to collecting thousands of items of information in his quest for accurate accounts of the past events of his town and area. He has already written accounts of our local history, Weddington, Park House, Teddy Kem and Bramcote - to name but a few dealing with historical data and characters from the past generations, as have other writers to whose valuable contributions Alan pays tribute in his acknowledgement.

It is interesting to note that another Nuneaton historian had a geological background, namely Dennis Milburn, whom I knew who wrote in 1963: Nuneaton. The Growth of a Town. I do not think anyone has attempted the mammoth task of investing over 30 years of research to establish such a complete work for present and future generations. As he collected the vast amount of information and started to computerise the results, Alan sorted his findings into chronological order, making a record of our past, including all the eventful periods in our history. This is Volume 8 of 9 for the Nuneaton Millennium Project and deals with Surname-Types for the Nuneaton area.

The Trent valley, with large areas prone to flooding, seemed an unlikely place for a settlement. There was another side to that coin however; water was valuable both for irrigation and for the keeping of livestock. In addition there were local hardwood forests providing early building materials and fuel for domestic and industrial use. This was soon supplemented by the discovery of local sandstone, coal, clay and limestones.

Soon waterwheels and windmills gave added value to the townscape, encouraging early Christian foundations to establish nunneries, priories and monasteries. As the art of building progressed, masons, carpenters and other tradesmen settled in the area near to these respective resources. Each newly discovered mineral enticed families to the area and a steady stream of workers settled ever after, reaching a climax in the early 20thC.

During this period many of our ancestors came, from all parts of Britain and even abroad to work and live in our community. They brought new trades and ideas, gradually turning a village into a town of importance. Railways, canals and highways were linked to our economy, transporting raw materials and importing goods and capital to sustain growth and stability. Our French, Flemish, Scottish, Welsh, Irish and English ancestors came together over the centuries to populate Nuneaton as it is today.

As a Nuneatonian, born and bred, I have great affection for our town. The past is part of us, our values and present characters being moulded in past generations by our genes and family traits. Nuneaton provided me with a good education which enabled me to work and teach for the National Coal Board and also teach at colleges in Coventry and Nuneaton. At the end of the Second World War I was fortunate enough to be accepted by the British Horological Institute to be trained in the arts of watch and clock making, working in two well known establishments in the town. I saw this trade as the ultimate in excellence in engineering and so began an enduring interest in time and the history of it - the use of it by past and present generations becoming of importance to me. I also had a business for 30 years in my home town, settling here for my retirement. I found in both my work and business that Nuneaton people are generous and resourceful, I am proud and happy to be one of them.

The author of this work is a friend of many years. His consultant expertise has been sought by leading civil and mining engineering companies. Historians and librarians also welcome his knowledge on local past events and I greatly admire him for making this contribution to the millennium which both enriches our knowledge and puts the facts on record for future generations.

This SURNAME-TYPE INDEX of Nuneaton includes peoples' surname-types where there is at least one or more reliable, independent archival source from censuses, terriers, registers, court records, taxes, indentures, rolls, bequests, wills, leases, polls, charters and manorial surveys etc. There may be certain omissions because the selection of names has been subjected to complicated screening techniques. It has been necessary to omit some names to prevent this index duplicating the census or electoral register which already exist yet at the same time thoroughly cross-referencing the surname-types included to make this a practical genealogical reference book. It is worth expanding on the criteria for the surnames that were compiled for this study:

                - families that lived for 2 or more successive generations in the area

                - families that made success or notoriety of what they inherited or were given

                - families that rose to fame or notoriety and survived the consequences

                - families that succeeded despite much adversity

Nuneaton has experienced a steady influx of people since monastic times, especially with the development of the Mediaeval clay industry, coal mining, quarrying and weaving. The rate of population doubling for the Nuneaton local town area is estimated from various censuses and records in the Public Record Office:

       population            625                         in 1560
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                70 years to double
                                                                                population            1,250      in 1630
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                75 years to double
                                                                                population            2,500      in 1705
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                60 years to double
                                                                                population            5,000      in 1765
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                120 years to double
                                                                                population            10,000   in 1885
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                16 years to double
                                                                                population            20,000   in 1901
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                24 years to double
                                                                                population            40,000   in 1925

The post-Domesday population grew very slowly e.g. overall net gain of less than 10 people per year; the population was obviously much reduced by the Black Death in the 14thC. Between the plague and 1670, the rate of population growth restored to less than 10 per year overall net gain. By 1670 this reached 10+ per year. From 1700 to 1885 it increased to approximately 40 per year.

After 1885 this influx began to accelerate dramatically with people coming from farther afield to settle. It should be remembered many families also left the area some never to come back!. A considerable number of families have therefore come and gone throughout time. There are approximately 147 family surname-types names in BOLD who can trace their roots back four centuries or more without too much difficulty.

There are just over half of those who may have even longer family connections with this town many are listed in the Constable Survey. These phenomena were brought about by the industrial and agricultural revolutions 1680-1890, turnpike roads 1650-1800, canals 1700-1800 and railways 1830-1955. The Nuneaton area's population estimate for 2001 A.D. is approximately 125,000; many of those people may find they have roots in this area, albeit from diverging branches of their pedigrees.

The following 147 names are local families with track records of four centuries or more :

ADECOCK, ALDRIDGE, ALLEN, ARCHER, ASHE, ASTELL, ASTLEY, ATKINS, BAKER, BANASTER, BARKER, BARNES, BARNWELL, BATES, BAXTER, BAYLY, BENNETT, BENTLEY, BOND, BONNER, BRETT, BROOKES, BRYAN, BUTLER, CARTER, CATTELL, CAVE, CLARK, COCKS, COMPTON, COOK, CORBITT, CORLEYE, COTTON, CURTEYS, DANNELLY, DAVIES, EDWARDS, EVERETT, FALK, FAUKONER, FAUKS, FAWCETT, FEILDING, FISHER, FORD, FRERE, GIBBE, GILBERT, GLEN, GOULD, GREEN, GREY, HADDON, HAINES, HALL, HARDING, HARRIS, HENRY, HEWITT, HILL, HINDMAN, HOLDEN, HULL, HUMFREY, INGE, INSLEY, JABET, JACQUES, JEFFERY, JELLIFFE, JERVIS, JOHNSON, LARGE, LAWRENCE, LEAKE, LEE, LUDFORD, MARSHALL, MARTEN, MASON, MICHEL, MILLER, MOORE, ODAM, ORCHARD, PAGET, PALMER, PARKER, PAYNE, PEARSON, PEEK, PERKINS, PORTER, POUTNEY, RALPHS, RANDLE, RATCLIFFE, REDE, RICHARDSON, RILEY, ROBERTS, ROBINSON, ROGERS, ROLF, de ROS, RUSSELL, SALISBURY, SANDERS, SCOTT, SELBY, SHEPHERD, SMITH, SOULE, SPARK, STARKEY, STOCKS, STOKES, SUMNER, SWAIN, SWANN, TAYLOR, THOMPSON, THORKELL, THORPE, TOWNSEND, TURNER, TYLER, VEASEY, VINCENT, WADCOCK, WAGSTAFF, WAITE, WALE, WALKER, WALTON, WARD, WARING, WATSON, WATTS, WETTON, WHEATLEY, WHITE, WILSON, WODEWARD, WOOD & WRIGHT.

BEWARE: Although I am a COOK, my family tree has little to do with the COOKS listed in this SURNAME-TYPE INDEX - your surname-type may share the same fate!! Of the 40 COOKS in the current telephone directory and electoral register, only one appears to be related to the author and few appear to be related to the COOKS listed in the Constable Rental Survey.

It should be noted that many of these surname-types were commonly mis-spelled or confused in local historical records. This was due to varying educational standards, regional dialects of census officials and clerics, grammatical rules that were not understood by the average person. Many local names have equivalents that are inconsistent with national spellings -- e.g. Taverner and Taberer can be locally related, but not in general British usage. Some of the names listed below are written so strangely e.g. Jumbly & Jelliffe; some names may prove untraceable in antiquity. Simple names such as KEM have over 40 different spellings.

The family historian should research any surname-type fully to find out what its correct spelling should be. This SURNAME-TYPE INDEX, by its very nature will be subject to revision. It covers pre-Domesday to approximately 1851-1885. After that date Nuneaton surname-types are subject to rapid cosmopolitan mixing and migration. The extractive and factory industries begin to attract people from other regions. The population became geographically and sociologically more mobile.

Where references do not occur after a surname-type, that surname-type usually occurs in archives post-1851 in date such as Trade Directories or Newspapers. Some names may also have connections with the Mediaeval coalfield history e.g. le Colyere, de Compton, Synekere, de Allesworth, Bugges etc. see VCH Warwickshire Vol. 1. In some cases, names may be older, but have not been recorded in the 18 essential references listed above. Name types such as Orton & Oughton are probably the same in the Nuneaton area, but in other parts of the country they are unrelated name types. Certain surname-types such as Carling are not included; the person in question was a late Victorian who rose to official prominence in Nuneaton and yet left few traces of a family history or pedigree, and like certain of his colleagues did not actually live in Nuneaton.
Please refer to the comprehensive bibliography at the end of the index.

Classification of Surnames:

Surnames may be divided into 4 groups, there is needless to say considerable overlap:

Local Surnames - Topoynmics, a common form of local surname consists of an adjective or noun denoting nationality or country or province from where the individual came.
Surnames of Relationship - Patronymics, this term strictly refers to the relationship on the father's side; it is now known that mothers and cousins also transmit this relationship
Metronymics, the mother's names Font names and Bynames, the font name is added to the christian name as a Byname Pet Name, these occur in all classeS Diminutives, suffixes like -el -in; or el -ot
Surnames of Occupation or Office, e.g. Carter, Cook, Butcher
Nicknames, less easily defined, this category can include many of the three above.
